Gaydon: Chanson de Geste Du XIIIe Siecle

The Song of Roland ends with the tears of Charlemagne, who is forced to leave on another campaign. But the emperor also faces political troubles within his realm: the trial and death of Ganelon following the judicial combat by which Thierry d'Anjou demonstrated his guilt necessarily lead to vows of vengeance by Ganalon's family. This is the dramatic subject of the Song of Goydon. The parents of the traitor move heaven and earth to destroy Thierry's privileged relationship with the emperor, have him condemned to death on a false accusation, and finally decide to kill the emperor as well. This Chanson the Geste (Song of Heroic Deeds) is presented here in the version of Ms f.fr.860 from the Bibliotheque Nationa. The edition is accompanied by an introduction, a translation into modern French, notes and indexes. French text.
