Opis lub recenzja książki

This CD-ROM is both a supplement and an additional resource to the third edition of the paper version of the atlas. The CD-ROM will be packaged with each atlas at no additional cost; students will pay a fee to unlock the contents of the CD for their own use. The purpose of the CD institutionally is to aid in the study of histology, where faculty to student ratios, and in-class time devoted to the subject are decreasing.

This is the second edition of a color atlas of histology first published in 1990. This atlas is intended to be used as an adjunct to the study of histological slides in the laboratory setting. It contains many high-quality light and a few electron micrographs. The editor intends the atlas to be used next to the microscope as an aid to a student's first exposure to the material. The book is written for beginning students of histology and as such it is well compiled to serve that audience. The editor has published several previous atlases of histology and has assembled an excellent array of color light micrographs and many high-quality electron micrographs. The figures are clearly labeled with appropriate, brief legends. This book is about micrographs and has very high-quality reproductions of light and electron micrographs. There are no references, but they are not really needed in such a publication. This edition contains outstanding three-dimensional color representations in all but one of the 19 chapters. Each chapter also concludes with a useful, brief, functional summary. The decision to publish the atlas as a spiral-bound soft cover is reasonable with respect to making the book more manageable at the lab bench, but this may diminish the useful life of the atlas. The overall quality and usefulness of this atlas place it in the top five of its competitors. Its greatest utility and value will be to the student actively studying in the laboratory rather than as a library reference source. The second edition represents a significant improvement over the earlier edition by virtue of the new 3D color drawings and the functional summaries at the end of each chapter. - Alvin Telser
